East Alabama Mental Health Prevention Services was awarded funding from Alabama Department of Mental Health to combat prescription drug abuse in Chambers County. This funding was awarded in February 2018 and aims to bring awareness and education of proper consumption of prescribed medication as well as proper disposal of unwanted or unused prescription medication.

Since receiving funding, Prevention Services has partnered with Chambers County Multi-Jurisdictional Drug Task Force (CCMJDTF) to supply permanent take back boxes at Valley Police Department and Chambers County Courthouse in Lafayette. In addition, Prevention Services and CCMJDTF have partnered for National Drug Take Back events which occur every October and April.

Prevention Services is elated to have the opportunity to expand services in Chambers County as well as include awareness for a growing issue in our area. They are working to create community based programs as well as school based programs in the coming year as well as expand on Alabama Department of Mental Health's #MySmartDose initiative to encourage individuals to take prescription medication as prescribed and not share with others.
